A charming coastal town in Martinique is featuring a vibrant beachfront leading to a historic church. People are strolling along the beach, and colorful buildings are lining the shore against lush green mountains.

The commune of Anses d'Arlet has on its territory some of the most popular beaches in Martinique. First of all, the town beach. Magnificent stretch of white sand with the old church in the background. Grande Anse obviously. Its restaurants at the water's edge, its sumptuous site... And a few kilometers further north, the famous Noire and Dufour coves. Miraculously preserved from excessive tourism, Anses d'Arlets are far from being a hotel Eldorado. So much the better. This is the opportunity to find a nice little gîte, or a beautiful villa with a view of the Caribbean Sea. In Grande Anse or in the village, there are numerous options.

$If there is one image that allows us to recognize the commune of Anses-d’Arlet above all others, it is that of its church, in the exact extension of the pontoon. Whether you are on land or at sea, you would recognize this postcard landscape among thousands.\n\n\nThe church was destroyed during the English attack on the town in 1762. A few years later, thanks to donations from the richest resident of the parish, Henri Larcher, the church was rebuilt.\nAs a sign of recognition, the parishioners decided to place it under the patronage of ST HENRI.\n\nIn 2007 the hurricane finished damaging the church which was already in need of serious work: a large part of the roof had blown off and the church remained open to the elements for many months. It was closed to the public. It was therefore first necessary to clear the interior, in order to be able to move around there. Companions of duty from mainland France were able to begin the work of “deconstructing” the bell tower. Indeed, in this type of building where we keep the existing walls, we cannot destroy the part located above. It is therefore literally necessary to dismantle, piece by piece, the bell tower. Sheet metal, metal structure then concrete, the bell tower gradually disappeared over the months.\n\nThe new frame, this time in wood as originally, arrived by boat. Etienne Poncelet, chief architect of Historical Monuments, designed a project which is close to the original architecture of the church and its bell tower. Many Arlesians still remember the wooden bell tower which existed before the last major works in 1956: the future bell tower will be quite similar, with its 3 floors topped with a cross and a rooster.\n\nIt took 3 years for the reopening of the church, renovated in 2010.\n\nIt can accommodate 455 people.$

The current stone structure, built in 1873 to replace earlier wooden churches destroyed by hurricanes, features Gothic Revival architecture with notable elements including pointed arch windows, buttresses, and a square bell tower. The church has survived numerous natural disasters, including Hurricane David in 1979, though it required significant repairs afterward. As one of the oldest religious buildings in Roseau, it serves as both an active place of worship and a testament to the island's Anglican heritage, having played an important role in the spiritual life of Dominica's English-speaking population since the British colonial period.
