Nearly a thousand years ago natives inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. Citadel Mesa Pueblo is in Wupatki National Monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage. Wupatki National Monument is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

$The house which is for tourists is on the right of the photo. The shacks of De Riet are in the distant left. The sky is blue and the ground is sand.\n\nDe Riet is in a remote part of Namibia. Tourists come to the area to see the rock engravings at the nearby Twfelfontein. Some stay on to find the desert-adapted elephants that live in the area of the Aba-Huab River and De Riet. \n\nThe people of De Riet are Riemvasmaakers. These were people who until 1974 lived in area of South African called Riemvasmaak. The South African military wanted to use the area, and re-located the people who lived there. The Riemvasmaakers were ethnically mixed, and those who were of Damara origin were moved to Damaraland in Namibia. Some of them formed the small settlement of De Riet. Life is very hard and they are trying to build a tourist industry. They are hoping these houses will make people stay with them \n\nThe photo was taken in February 2020.$

The fairy circles in the Namib Desert range from about 12 to 114 feet in diameter and consist of bare patches of soil surrounded by rings of grass. It's believed that the bare patches act as water reservoirs which the grass along the edges of the circle can access.
