Armed only a buffalo hide shield and a long spear they are known to kill lions with only this waeponry. They live in small villages called manyattas, where mud huts are built and then surrounded by a big rounded thorn fence, as a protection against lions and other predators.

The San Francisco Volcanic Field spreads out over 1,800 square miles of northern Arizona.  This is an area of young volcanoes along the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. During its 6 million year history, this field has produced more than 600 volcanoes. The varied landscape includes grasslands, forests and rugged mountains.  The volcano pictured here is Kendrick Peak, at 10,418’,one of the highest mountains in Arizona.
