Rome, Italy - April 16, 2016: Piazza Navona with crowds of people, probably mostly tourists, on an overcast morning in spring. The piazza (city square) was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian (Stadio di Domiziano), also known as the Circus Agonalis, commissioned around AD 80 by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome. It was originally mostly used for athletic contests. In the background is the Fountain of the four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini) with the Egyptian obelisk. To the left is another fountain, the Moor Fountain (Fontana del Moro). It represents a Moor, or African, standing in a conch shell, wrestling with a dolphin, surrounded by four Tritons. The large building to the left is the Sant'Agnese in Agone, a 17th-century Baroque church. The early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. Construction began in 1652.

A twilight view over Piazza del Popolo seen from the viewpoint of the Pincio Gardens in Villa Borghese, in the historic heart of Rome. In neoclassical style, the current elliptical shape of Piazza del Popolo is the work of the Roman architect and urban planner Giuseppe Valadier, who in the early 19th century redesigned the entire square and the large central fountain, relocating an Egyptian obelisk that was transported to Rome by the emperor Augustus to embellish the Circus Maximus and present in this square since 1589. On the left the two twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. An unusual and suggestive view of the historic heart of Rome and Piazza del Popolo seen from a panoramic terrace. In the background Porta del Popolo or Porta Flaminio (Flaminio Gate), formerly built by the Romans along the ancient Aurelian walls. The external facade of Porta del Popolo was restructured in the 16th century at the request of Pope Pius IV based on drawings by Michelangelo. The internal facade, visible in the photo, was instead rebuilt in 1655 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Built in 1823 in neoclassical style by the architect and urban planner Giuseppe Valadier, Piazza del Popolo is one of the most iconic places in the Eternal City. In the center, the large fountain with the Egyptian obelisk already present in the square since 1589, transported to Rome by the Emperor Augustus for the Circus Maximus, and which Valadier embellishes at the corners with the marble statues of four lions.
