Within its perimeter some members of the Italian royal family and famous artists are buried, including the painter Raphael, a great protagonist of Renaissance art. The dome of the Pantheon, built in concrete and brick, is a masterpiece of engineering and the prototype of all the domes subsequently built in Christian churches in Europe. With a diameter of 43.44 meters, it is still the largest dome in the world today. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
