Beja Airport, Portugal: sonar buoys chutes - sonobuoys are used in anti-submarine warfare and submarine rescue - there are two main types, active buoys send out sonar pulses, which reflect off of the submarine, and the return is datal inked back to the aircraft, passive buoys listen for any radiated noise from the submarine contact -  hydrophone sensors and stabilizing equipment are below the water surface, the buoy relays acoustic information from its hydrophone via UHF/VHF radio to operators on board the aircraft - Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft, a military derivative of the Lockheed L-188 Electra. Beja, Portugal: parked Lockheed P-3 Orion, a four-engine, propeller-driven aircraft used as a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The P-3 Orion is a military derivative of the Lockheed L-188 Electra civil aircraft. Due to the Azores and Madeira archipelagos, Portugal controls a vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Atlantic Ocean. Beja Airport serves both civil and military aviation.
Lockheed P-3 Orion hurricane hunter. This aircraft is one of two built specifically for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the purpose of flying through hurricanes to collect storm date. The aircraft has a multi-mode radar and a doppler radar as well as the capability to drop sensors through the storm and into the ocean. Data collected by the plane include wind velocities, storm shape, storm direction, and ocean temperatures.
