This aircraft is one of two built specifically for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the purpose of flying through hurricanes to collect storm date. The aircraft has a multi-mode radar and a doppler radar as well as the capability to drop sensors through the storm and into the ocean. Data collected by the plane include wind velocities, storm shape, storm direction, and ocean temperatures.
