Close-up of a Thorny Seahorse (Hippocampus histrix) on a tropical coral reef
Thorny Seahorse Hippocampus histrix occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from South Africa to French Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Australia, but not in the Red Sea. The stationary species occurs at a depth of 0 to 82m, usually from 15 to 40m, max. length 17cm.\nHippocampus histrix is a rare inhabitant of shallow sheltered reefs, found among clumps of algae or in seagrass beds and associated with sponges and sea-squirts. Large adults are pelagic and probably associated with drifting debris. \nThe species feeds on zooplanktons and small crustaceans. The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail. The use in traditional Chinese medicine is increasing with the rise in patent medicines. So Thorny Seahorse Hippocampus histrix has most recently been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2017. \nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'39.6878 N 125°14'33.3432 E at 23m depth
