A suggestive view of the courtyard and the porch of the Palazzo dei Priori, in the medieval heart of Viterbo, in central Italy. Built in 1264 as the seat of the civic government, the Palazzo de Priori was also used over the centuries as the seat of the Papal government. The current Renaissance-style structure was built in 1460 while the portico was built in 1541. Currently the Palazzo dei Priori is the seat of the Municipality of Viterbo (Town Hall). The medieval center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean. Located about 100 kilometers north of Rome, in the Lazio region, Viterbo is also known as the City of Popes because in the 13th century it was the seat of papal power for 24 years. Founded by the Etruscan civilization and recognized as a city in the year 852, Viterbo is characterized by its peperino stone and tuff constructions, materials abundantly present in this region of central Italy. The austere stone colonnade in the Lower Square of the Basilica di San Francesco in the medieval town of Assisi in Umbria, central Italy. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica, which preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor from 1230, is composed of the Basilica Inferiore (Lower Basilica) and the Basilica Superiore (Upper Basilica), perfectly integrated. Famous for being the homeland of St. Francis and St. Clare, over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity between peoples and between the different confessions of the world. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2000, the Basilica and the other Franciscan places in Assisi have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition quality.
