![Saint-Tropez (pronounced [sɛ̃ tʁɔ.pe]) is a French commune located in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, capital of the canton of Saint-Tropez.\n\nFrom the corsair city dominated by its 16th century citadel to the fishing village at the start of the 20th century, the first town liberated during the landings in Provence became, from the 1950s, an internationally known seaside resort on the Var Côte d'Azur thanks to the craze of New Wave artists, then yéyés and finally, a resort for the European and American jet set as well as tourists in search of Provençal authenticity or celebrities.\n\nOn its twelve kilometers of coastline, the town has six beaches, to the west at the limit with Gassin, the large beach of Bouillabaisse, in the old village, the beaches of Ponche and Fontanette, after the marine cemetery, Graniers beach, in the bay of the same name, long Canebiers beach and at the eastern end of the peninsula, Moutte beach and Salins beach4.
