Yellow-throated toucan in the rain forest - Costa Rica

It measures approximately 46 centimeters in length. Its main feature, the black beak, is laterally compressed at the top, a feature visible depending on the lighting, where a kind of crease can be seen. The beak can be completely black, or black with a yellowish line on the top (culmen) as in some ssp. Amazonian (north of RR, south of AM south of the Rio Negro and AC). At the base of the beak there is a vertical line (basal line) that can be all yellow (ssp ariel and culminatus) or all blue (ssp vittelinus) or even with both colors in both parts, as in individuals from Acre (in the species toucan- of white-breasted this line is yellow at the top and blue at the bottom, which helps to differentiate one species from another). Around the eye there is a bare area that can be red (ssp ariel) or blue (ssp vittelinus, citreolaemus and culminatus). The crop varies from completely white (ssp.culminatus in most regions), going yellow to bright orange (ssp. ariel). Depending on the region, we can still find variations of these combinations. There is a red band on the underside that separates the breast feathers from the rest of the black plumage. The lower coverts are red, and the upper coverts may be red or yellow. Blue gray feet.
