Here we see a large, venomous Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa). It has camouflaged itself deep in the sand to await passing prey. Stonefish are the most venomous fish in the world and can be lethal to humans. Coral reefs are the one of earths most complex ecosystems, containing over 800 species of corals and one million animal and plant species. The location is Ko Haa, Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand.

The scorpionfish is a fascinating and elusive marine species found in the vibrant coral reefs of the Red Sea, Egypt. Renowned for its extraordinary camouflage, this predator blends seamlessly with its surroundings, mimicking the textures and colors of corals and rocks to ambush prey.\n\nScorpionfish are part of the Scorpaenidae family and are equipped with venomous spines along their dorsal fins, offering protection from predators. Although their venom can cause painful stings to humans, they are not aggressive and typically rely on their camouflage to avoid threats.\n\nThese fish are relatively small, with most species measuring 30–40 cm in length. Their mottled appearance and ability to remain motionless make them difficult to spot, even for experienced divers. They primarily feed on small fish and crustaceans, striking with lightning speed when prey ventures too close.\n\nThe Red Sea, known for its rich biodiversity and clear waters, provides an ideal habitat for the scorpionfish. It is a favorite subject for underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts, though caution is advised when exploring its habitat due to its venomous nature.\n\nThe scorpionfish embodies the intricate beauty and complexity of marine life in the Red Sea, making it a highlight of any diving experience in the region.

Crocodile Fish Cymbacephalus beauforti occurs in the tropical West Pacific in shallow waters from 1-12 m. The species, an ambush predator, lives on sand or rubble substrates of sheltered or semi-exposed reefs and is also found in coral reefs and mangrove areas. \nThe cirri (= leafy appendages above the eyes) break up the outline of the eye, so its much harder for their prey to spot them. \nSomehow looking a bit like a crocodile, this species is much smaller, the maximum length is 50 cm, the common length 35 cm. \n\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, Indonesia \n3°51'45.88 S 133°57'46.59 E at 9m depth

Golden Damsel Amblyglyphidodon aureus occurs in the tropical Western Pacific from Andaman Sea and Christmas Island in the Eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to Rowly Shoals and New Caledonia in a depth range from 3-45m, max. length 13cm.\nJuveniles in small groups are often found among large sea fans. Adults occur in steep outer reef, occasionally in deep lagoons and along channel walls, usually in current prone habitats and where there are abundant gorgonian and long sea-whip corals on which they lay and guard eggs. The species feeds on zooplankton. \nMost of the time, a fish's behavior depends on its species. From time to time it is possible to meet exceptions, like this specimen, a very curious character, not shy at all, who kept looking at the camera.\nTriton Bay, Indonesia, 3°54'52.0617 S 134°7'21.3867 E at 9m depth

The Tassled Scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis oxycephala is a master of camouflage in highly variable colour and so a successful ambush perdator. He has 12 dorsal spines. The first in front is much shorter, the last is hidden in the fat layer. \nThe species occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from Red Sea to the Seychelles (Seychelles confirmed by own reseach) and to Taiwan and Guam in outer cleat-water reef slopes and channels in a depth range from shallow to 35m, max. length 36cm, common 30cm. \nTriton Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n4°2'33.036 S 134°14'12.858 E at 5m depth

The tasseled scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis oxycephala), is a carnivorous ray-finned fish with venomous spines. Camouflage and speed are it's weapons when hunting. Often looking innocently like a stone or rock, it awaits it's prey in the sand and coral.
