Whittier was built during World War II as a military camp. Today it became a port of call for cruise ships and a gateway for Alaska tourism activities.

$Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), also known as as Northern sea lions live in the waters that surround Alaska, such as the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, and the Gulf of Alaska, including Prince William Sound. Steller sea lions are pinnipeds, making them relatives harbor seals.\nSea lions may be seen in Valdez most easily from the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery on Dayville Road, where they are often seen eating salmon.$

Catching the dish in the nets is a group egfort. The v\nMembers of the fishing boat work in unison to bring in the large catch. On this day they are gathering Pink Salmon. These salmon will be taken to canneries to be processed.$
