Wadi Rum is a desert valley cut into the sandstone and granite cliffs in southern Jordan. Known also as the Valley of the Moon it has been inhabited since prehistoric times (witnessed by the petroglyph inscriptions) and by semi nomadic tribes since the Nabataeans but is best known for its association with T E Lawrence - Lawrence of Arabia - who based himself here to encourage the Arab Revolt and to attack Turkish Forces of the Ottoman Empire during WW1. He was later immortalized by the film of the same name, made in 1962 by David Lean. Today the only inhabitants are Bedouin tribes and transient tourists.

An emblem of Southwest USA, Sagebrush is in the forefront of a dramatic Nevada landscape. Safebrush is the official state plant of Nevada and covers most of the state. It is rarely eaten by wildlife or livestock because of the bitterness of its foliage.

Indigenous culture

The Pioneer Names were written in wagon axle grease on the walls of the red rock alcove. Early Mormon Pioneers would often picnic in the canyon, and these writings were likely left by members of picnic parties and/or cattle ranchers. The Pioneer Names Trail in Snow Canyon State Park is an interesting climb to see the names carved into the rock face. May 26, 2013.
