A narrow alley (street) with buildings and arches made of stone in the medieval village of Mesta on the Greek Island of Chios in the Aegean Sea. The image was captured on grainy (ISO 400) black and white analogue film by a 35 mm old-fashioned film camera. Mesta is part of a group of villages on Chios called the mastic villages (the Mastihochoria region in Greek) because they produced and traded mastic gum from mastic trees. The houses of the village are build side-by-side to each-other, so tightly that there are only two entrances to the village (that were closed by gates at night, and when pirates approached the village). The streets are very narrow, and most of them are covered with arches and vaults. The streets form a maze to slow down any enemy that managed to enter the gates and ease the defence of the most important buildings located in the center of the village. The image is part of a series of black and white analogue photographs of picturesque Greek Island Villages on the Island of Chios.
