The stunning neoclassical facade with mosaics and colonnade of the Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura (Saint Paul Outside the Walls) in the Ostiense district of Rome. Built in 324 A.D. at the behest of the Roman emperor Constantine on the tomb of the Apostle Paul, the Basilica was enlarged to its present form starting from 386 AD. by Emperor Theodosius I and was consecrated in 402 AD. by Pope Innocent I. The mosaics on the façade were made between 1854 and 1874 by Filippo Agricola and Nicola Consoni, on the basis of the 10th century originals which were destroyed. In the center, the marble statue of St. Paul, made by Giuseppe Obici in the first half of the 19th century. This sacred place for Christianity was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980. The Basilica of Saint Paul is one of the four ancient major basilicas of Rome, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter's, and Saint Mary Major. The facade and the medieval bell tower of the Basilica di Santa Cecilia (St. Cecilia Basilica), in the ancient Trastevere district, in the historic heart of Rome. According to legend, this church was built starting from the 5th century in the place where St. Cecilia was martyred, in 220 AD. The church took on its current Baroque style after some transformations made in the 16th century. Inside, under the main altar, you can admire the marble statue of St. Cecilia made in 1599 by the sculptor Stefano Maderno, which depicts the body of the saint covered by a veil, as it was in her original tomb present in the ancient perimeter of the church. Trastevere is an iconic district of the Eternal City, due to the presence of countless artistic and historical treasures, monuments and ancient Romanesque and Baroque churches, but also for its squares and alleys to be explored freely, where it is easy to find typical restaurants, pubs, small shops of artisans and scenes of daily life with the original Roman soul.
