$Kalkaringi, Northern Territory, Australia - August 26, 2022: Aerial view of the Freedom Day Festival ceremony site next to the Victoria River in the township of Kalkaringi.\n\nKalkarindji is a community on the land formerly held under the Wave Hill Cattle Station. In 1966, the Aboriginal station workers, led by Vincent Lingiari, staged the Gurindji strike, also known as the Wave Hill Walk Off, in protest against oppressive labour practices and land dispossession. In their honour, we gather on Gurindji Country every August to commemorate and celebrate at the Gurindji Freedom Day Festival. \n\nThe festival is delivered by the Gurindji Aboriginal Corporation, and this iconic event helps to keep Gurindji culture and the Gurindji story alive. Part of the festival re-creates the famous Walk-off. Together, we walk in solidarity with our flags. Beginning at the Art Centre and finishing at the river ceremony site.$

Blue Mesa Scenic Trail, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA

$An overcast photo of the Lady of Lourdes Grotto/Shrine just before it was torn down in 2008. The trees to the right of it were chopped down and the stumps removed. The farmers have begun working the field to plant crops. The sky is dark and overcast with incoming rain. \nThe grotto was built on the Lourdes Farm, just south of Lethbridge, on Highway 4, owned by the ‘Brothers of Lourdes”. They were a charitable organization from Holland made up of clergy from the Roman Catholic Church. \nThe Grotto/Shrine seen here was built by them in 1955. Modelled after the Shrine of Lourdes in France, it was built with 2X4 wood pieces firmly nailed together and draped with burlap dipped in a concrete slurry. A statue of the Virgin Mary sat in the opening near the top. The bottom opening contained a small alter and candle racks with kneeler benches outside. The grotto was the location of religious ceremonies and was also open for people to worship and light candles. The fence was put in by new owners. Originally there was a turn off from the highway and an area to park.$

Blueish purple mesas in northern Arizona.

Badlands are a particular type of rock formation found in arid regions around the world. These formations require poorly consolidated rock and infrequent but torrential rain. The soft rock allows large quantities of water to channel down gullies, carrying away sediment. Bentonite clay within these formations can swell up with moisture. As the clay dries it shrinks and cracks, creating a surface resembling the skin of an elephant. Beneath the surface, an intricate maze of natural pipes and spaces form within the badlands. This hidden plumbing appears on the face of the badlands as dimples, sinks, slumps and seeps. As erosion continues, new features including caves and natural bridges can form. Badlands often take on varied colors giving the formations a banded appearance. These colorful badland formations were at Blue Mesa in Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona, USA.
