Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as New Zealand tea tree, is an upright evergreen shrub, native to southeastern Australia and New Zealand. It sometimes grows in tree form to 15-20' or taller. Its features include small, prickly, needle-like leaves and solitary, cup-shaped flowers which bloom in late spring. Cultivars produce red, pink or white flowers in both single and double varieties and, in Japan, they are in bloom in winter and spring.

Flowers greenish-yellow, often with reddish margins and streaks, borne in a slender spike, often many-flowered, each flower manikin-like, with the sepals and petals forming a close hood; lip 12-15mm, pendent, the lateral lobes forming short, narrow ‘arms’ and the central lobe divided into narrow legs; spurless.\nHabitat: Grassland, field boundaries, abandoned quarries, banks and open scrub, rarely along woodland margins, on calcareous soils, to 1500m.\nFlowering Season: May-June.\nDistribution: S & SE Britain, Belgium, Holland, France and Germany.\n\nThis Picture is made during a long weekend in the Eifel (Germany) in June 2019.
