An interesting reef: At five metres, large patches of branching Acropora and a three metre Turbinaria peltata colony were encountered. Hard coral cover averaged 60%, soft corals 22%, turf algae and sponges less than 1%, crustose coralline algae 18%. Table Acropora colonies exceed three metres in size.\nThe coral lesion repair was moderate, and both overgrowth of damaged portions of coral colonies and reorientation in growth plane of toppled corals were high.\n\nA large Table Acropora Coral dominates the scenery with some Isopora Corals around. \n\nMany fish species are in the background. \n\nBui Island, Indonesia\n5°5'13.77 S 131°55'36.654 E at 8m depth

Neotrypaea californiensis (formerly Callianassa californiensis), the Bay ghost shrimp, is a species of ghost shrimp that lives on the Pacific coast of North America. The appearance of this pretty coral belies its aggressive behavior. Many individual coral polyps form colonies which join together at the base of their skeletons. These colonies grow to form branches, columns, solid colonies that are dome-shaped, or colonies that adhere close to the substrate. Colonies may be meters across and sometimes whole sections of a reef face are covered exclusively by one branching Goniopora species. \nGoniopora sp. has flower-like polyps, and can grow to cover areas of six to ten meters. Each polyp has 24 long and fleshy tentacles that are normally extended day and night, although these quickly retract when touched revealing the massive skeletons beneath. Each Goniopora species differs in the shape and colour of their polyps, which allows their identification underwater. \n\nGoniopora occurs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans; from the coast of Mozambique, to the Red Sea, and east to northern Australia, southern Japan and Hawaii. \nFlowerpot corals are most commonly found in turbid water protected from strong wave action. Flowerpot corals are capable of developing elongated sweeper polyps, like the sweeper tentacles of other corals, which can inflict severe tissue damage on a coral within their reach. It is therefore unusual to see other coral species growing close to the flowerpot coral, and it is believed that this adaptation benefits the flowerpot coral in the intense competition for space on the reef. \nFlowerpot corals have separate male and female colonies (not all corals do) which release sperm and eggs into the water for external fertilisation. The fertilised egg develops into a free-swimming larva that will eventually settle on the substrate and develop into new colonies.\n\nKarang Rembang, north of Tayandu Island, Indonesia, \n5°27'4.812 S 132°23'54.732 E at 17m depth

This Table coral (Acropora cytherea) is showing signs of coral bleaching and disease. The brown parts are healthy, the white parts are where the coral has expelled its healthy symbiotic algae leaving only the animal exoskeleton. Possibly due to pollution, disease, ocean acidification or global warming. Location is Ko Haa Islands, Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand.

The surf zone is a special habitat. Due to the intensive movement of the water, many nutrients reach the sedentary organisms. Surf zones are also geologically interesting: when diving at depths of 10, 20 or more meters, you can easily recognize the surf zones of bygone eras. \nIt is not too bright under the rocky outcrop. Black corals also feel at home there in shallow water. Black Sun Coral Tubastraea micrantha, Sun Coral Tubastraea faulkneri, Hydroids and sponges are there too. \nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°55'1.098 S 134°6'4.638 E at 2m depth
