Underwater splitshot image of mangrove forest.\n Mangroves are plants that can live in saltwater. These important plants not only create a refuge for a vast number of marine animals, birds and reptiles but also play an important role in countering coastal erosion. \n\nThe dense network of roots and branches retain sediments and create a natural barrier protecting coastal communities against the more and more frequent floodings and hurricanes. \n\nFurther, mangroves have the capacity to sequester up to 10 times more CO2 per area compared to other forest ecosystems. Therefore these habitats serve as a blue carbon sink.\n\nUnfortunately, destruction of these important habitats due to development currently happens on a large scale worldwide.

Djègbadji, Ouidah commune, Atlantique Department, Benin: Djègbadji Lagoon is a coastal body of water near Djègbadji, close to Ouidah in southern Benin, surrounded by rich mangrove ecosystems. These mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the lagoon, acting as natural buffers against coastal erosion and providing habitats for diverse marine life, particularly fish and crustaceans. The local communities rely heavily on the lagoon for fishing and salt production, both of which benefit from the protection and biodiversity supported by the mangroves. In addition to their ecological importance, the lagoon and its mangroves are also of interest for eco-tourism, highlighting the need for sustainable conservation efforts in the area.

Mangroves consist of various species, including Rhizophora (red mangroves), Avicennia (black mangroves), and Laguncularia (white mangroves). \n\nMangroves are coastal ecosystems found in tropical and subtropical regions, characterized by salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that thrive in intertidal zones. They play a crucial role in the environment by providing habitat for diverse wildlife, stabilizing shorelines against erosion, and acting as natural filters that improve water quality. Mangroves also serve as rich fishing grounds, supporting species such as shrimp, crabs, and juvenile fish, which rely on these habitats for breeding and shelter. Additionally, they help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon, making them vital for both biodiversity and human livelihoods.
