Mount Evans, Clear Creek County, Fronte Range of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA: yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris) and granite rocks. These marmots  live in the western United States and Canada, including the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains, in high alpine regions at around 2000 meters. They hibernate for approximately eight months starting in September and lasting through the winter.

Marmots play on rocks
The groundhog, or Marmota monax, is also called a woodchuck and is in the rodent family of Sciuridae, and in the general category of marmot. The groundhog is shown in detail standing erect looking left, as if on alert.  Its fur, whiskers, ears front limbs and claws are in fine focus.  There is one small piece of green grass resting on its bottom lip and the photograph shows both the thicker brown undercoat and the longer, lighter guard hairs.  Its underbelly is damp from the morning dew.
